PENNSYLVANIA, PAINT-DECORATED SETTEE WITH BOLD, CHROME YELLOW PINSTRIPING AND FLORAL DECORATION, 1845-1865
Dimensions (inches): 71.5" long x 34.5" tall x 21" deep
Description:
Paint-decorated, Pennsylvania, plank-seat settee of the mid-19th century (1845-65), in the half-spindle-back style with an angel wing crest rail. The deep, brown background is trimmed all over with a notably large degree of bold, chromatic yellow pinstripes and scrollwork. The theorem-like registers on the crest rails and horizontal back slats are typical of rural Pennsylvania chairs and benches. These are gilded and painted in gold, silver, copper, green and black. The theme is continued on the lower slats and the edges of the seat. The overall result is a colorful and well-executed example of Pennsylvania German folk art on a piece of rural-made, paint- decorated furniture.

Condition: Very minor wear, far less than expected. Original varnish cleaned from seat surface and re-applied.
