UNUSUAL COUNTRY SLANT-LID, STAND-UP SECRETARY DESK IN WHITE PAINT WITH A SINGLE, RAISED PANEL DOOR, ca 1845
Dimensions (inches): 48" tall x 38.5" wide x 22.5" deep
Description:
Country, American, slant-top, stand-up desk in a very unusual form with a cupboard beneath instead of a frame or graduated drawers. Made between roughly 1835 and 1855, this rural adaptation has a single door with two raised panels, a mushroom knob, and a fine brass spinner that is original to its construction. The front of the desk well is finished with a recessed panel. The board dividing this and the cupboard section is beveled so that it steps back slightly. The wood is wide pine planks with a single board lid and a three-board back that runs right to the floor. The sides and stiles are scalloped at the bottom to create nicely raised feet. The overall form is well-balanced and visually pleasing. The white paint has light crazing and great patina, aged, worn, and attractive. This is a 4th surface over mustard, green, and red.

Condition: Minor to modest, expected wear to the painted surface. Very minor losses and splits around the scalloped feet. The cast iron hinges moved or changed at some point so that they are recessed into the top.
