Description:
Triangular pennant, made for the United States Military Academy at West Point. Printed with a striking and unusually saturated shade of canary yellow, complemented by shades of gold and red, the black felt ground creates great contrast. Made sometime between 1940 and the 1950's, the graphics consist of the Academy's coat of arms, followed by tapered block lettering. The crest consists of a spread wing eagle grasping arrows and olive branches that fan out from both talons, along with a billowing streamer that reads "Duty Honor, Country" to the left, the Academy's motto, and contains the date of its founding, "1802." This rests upon a federal shield with 13 stars, upon which is a sword and the helmet of Athena, Greek Goddess of War. There is a cheddar yellow felt binding along the hoist, with two sets of black felt ties.

Mounting: The banner was mounted and framed within our own conservation department, which is led by expert staff. We take great care in the mounting and preservation of flags and have framed thousands of examples.

The background is 100% natural hemp fabric or a hemp and cotton blend, ivory in color. The two part frame consists of a cove-shaped molding that is very dark brown in color, almost black, with red undertones and highlights, to which a gilded Italian molding of exceptional quality was added as a liner. The glazing is U.V. protective plexiglass.

Condition: There is minor to moderate fading of the red pigment, but the overall condition is excellent.
