Description....:
7 star American parade flag, printed on coarse, glazed cotton, made to commemorate the first wave of Confederate States that seceded from the Union on February 4th, 1861. Texas was the 7th of these states, which also included, in order, South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, and Louisiana. While Northern children waved 13 star flags and flags with the full star count, some of their Southern counterparts waved 7, 8, & possibly 9 star flags as a subtle means of displaying their Confederate loyalties.

Some of these little parade flags date to the Civil War, like this example. Others were made post-war. Note how the stars of this particular variety have unusually elongated arms, which adds a nice degree of folk quality to the design. This is example is also the largest in scale among those that were produced, which makes for a bolder presentation.

Mounting: The flag was mounted and framed within our own conservation department, which is led by expert staff. We take great care in the mounting and preservation of flags and have framed thousands of examples.

The solid walnut molding dates to the period between 1870 and 1890, and retains its original gilded liner with resist decoration. The background is 100% cotton twill, black in color. Spacers keep the textile away from the glazing, which is U.V. protective glass.

Condition: There is very minor soiling and a couple of tiny stains. Many of my clients prefer early flags to show their age and history of use.
